Getting connected in Nepal is one of the first things to do on arrival. Here is exactly how to get a SIM card as a foreigner — at the airport or in the city.

Which network? Ncell vs Ntc

Nepal has two main mobile carriers:

  • Ncell (private, Axiata-owned) — faster 4G in cities, good data packages, more popular with nomads
  • Ntc / Nepal Telecom (state-owned) — better coverage in rural areas and trekking routes, slightly cheaper plans

For Kathmandu or Pokhara: Ncell is the better choice for speed. If you plan to trek: Ntc has better signal in the hills and remote areas.

How to buy a SIM

You need your passport. Registration is mandatory by law.

Option 1: At Tribhuvan Airport (recommended)

There are Ncell and Ntc counters in the arrivals hall, just past baggage claim. Open during all flight arrival hours. Takes 5–10 minutes. This is the easiest option — buy before you even leave the airport.

Option 2: In the city

Ncell and Ntc shops are everywhere in Thamel, Lakeside Pokhara, and all main shopping areas. Also sold at convenience stores. Bring your passport. Cost: NPR 100 ($0.75) for the SIM.

SIM as a backup hotspot

Many nomads use their SIM data as a backup when co-working or cafe WiFi is slow. 4G on Ncell in Kathmandu can reach 20–40 Mbps — enough for video calls if needed. Keep a top-up balance for the month.

Top-up and data renewal

Recharge at any Ncell/Ntc shop, convenience store, or via the Ncell/Ntc apps. Activate the next data pack before the current one expires (you lose remaining data otherwise). Set a phone reminder.

eSIM option

Airalo offers an eSIM for Nepal (Ncell network) that can be activated before arrival. Useful if you do not want to wait at the airport counter. Data costs slightly more than buying locally but the convenience is worth it for some.
