How much does a comfortable month in Kathmandu actually cost? We tracked a real nomad's spending over 30 days — here is every expense, broken down honestly.
The setup
One-bedroom apartment in Lazimpat, full-time co-working membership at Thamel Hub, eating out for most meals (mix of local dal bhat and occasional Western food), occasional weekend day trips. This is not a budget backpacker stay — it is a comfortable, sustainable nomad life.
Accommodation: $380
One-bedroom furnished apartment in Lazimpat with fiber internet included. Monthly rate negotiated directly with landlord (paid in NPR equivalent). This is mid-range for Kathmandu — similar places in Thamel start around $250, in Jhamsikhel around $450.
Co-working: $120
Monthly hot desk membership at Thamel Hub. Includes unlimited coffee, locker, and occasional use of meeting room. Day passes for a one-off visit would be $8–$12.
Food: $210
Breakfast at home or cafe ($1.50–$3). Lunch out — dal bhat or noodles ($2–$4). Dinner at a mix of local restaurants and Thamel eateries ($4–$12). Two coffee shop working sessions per week ($3–$5 each). Total: roughly $7/day.
Transport: $45
Pathao (ride-hailing) for evening trips + occasional taxi. Walked to co-working most days (15 min from Lazimpat). No need for a private vehicle in the city.
SIM + data: $9
Ncell monthly data pack (25GB). Used as backup hotspot on slow co-working days.
Entertainment & weekends: $85
Boudhanath entry fee, Pashupatinath, two day trips (Nagarkot sunrise + Patan museum), cinema once, a paragliding prep walk, local event entry.
Miscellaneous: $55
Pharmacy, toiletries, a new laptop bag from Thamel market, miscellaneous cafe upgrades.
Total: $904
A comfortable, productive month in Kathmandu — good apartment, full co-working membership, eating out daily, weekend activities — came to $904. That is well under the $1,500 we started with, leaving $596 as savings or buffer.
