Weekend Adventures from Kathmandu — Day Trips for Digital Nomads
Work hard Monday to Friday, then escape. The best day trips and weekend adventures within 2 hours of Kathmandu — mountains, temples, hiking, and authentic local experiences.
Weekend Day Trips from Kathmandu
One of the best things about being a digital nomad in Kathmandu is what surrounds you. Within 2 hours of the city, you have world-class mountain viewpoints, ancient towns, jungle wildlife, and multi-day trekking trailheads. Here are the best options.
Nagarkot — Sunrise mountain views (1.5 hours)
Nagarkot at 2,175 m offers one of the best accessible Himalayan panoramas in Nepal. Go up the evening before, sleep in a simple guesthouse, and wake for the sunrise view of the Himalayas (on clear days, Everest and Langtang are visible). Buses leave from Bhaktapur bus station; shared jeeps from Thamel.
Bhaktapur — Medieval Newari city (30 minutes)
A UNESCO World Heritage city just 13 km from Kathmandu. Bhaktapur Durbar Square is extraordinarily preserved — potters, temples, and narrow alleys that feel like stepping into the 15th century. Entry NPR 1,500 for foreigners. Explore the pottery district, eat Juju Dhau (king curd), and return in an afternoon.
Dhulikhel — Mountain views and quiet retreat (1.5 hours)
Like Nagarkot but less touristy. Mountain sunrise views, good guesthouses, and a historic bazaar town. Popular with expats for weekend escapes. Easy bus from Kalanki or shared taxi.
Panauti — Unspoiled Newari town (1.5 hours)
One of Nepal's best-kept secrets. Ancient temples, no entry fee, almost no tourists, and a very authentic atmosphere. Combine with Dhulikhel or Namobuddha monastery for a full-day circuit.
Shivapuri National Park — Forest hiking (1 hour from Thamel)
A forested hill just north of Kathmandu. Entry NPR 500. Hike to Shivapuri peak (2,732 m) for valley views, or explore quiet forest trails. Good for a half-day escape. No overnight required.
Pokhara weekend (5–6 hours by tourist bus)
For a longer escape, Pokhara is the classic weekend trip. Leave Friday evening or early Saturday morning, spend two days by the lake, return Sunday evening. The Prithvi Highway journey itself is scenic. Tourist buses: NPR 800–1,200 each way. Night bus option saves the morning.
